Girl Led Innovations

At GITA-Africa, we believe that empowering girls through tourism also means empowering them to innovate, create, and lead. Through the Girl-Led Innovations programme, we seek to identify, nurture, and amplify ideas developed by girls and young women, helping transform them from concepts into impactful initiatives and sustainable enterprises.

We recognize that innovation exists in many forms. Whether through tourism products, cultural enterprises, conservation solutions, digital initiatives, creative arts, community projects, or entrepreneurship, girls possess the ability to develop ideas capable of addressing challenges, creating opportunities, and contributing to socio-economic transformation.

Our role is to provide encouragement, visibility, mentorship, and where possible, connect these innovators to relevant stakeholders, institutions, and opportunities that can support the growth and implementation of their ideas.

Celebrating Girls Who Create

This section serves as a platform to spotlight businesses, innovations, projects, and initiatives led by girls and young women within our network. By sharing these stories, we aim to;

  • Inspire other girls to pursue their ideas with confidence
  • Promote women-owned businesses and enterprises
  • Encourage collaboration and peer support
  • Increase visibility for girl-led initiatives
  • Connect innovators to opportunities, mentors, and relevant institutions
  • Demonstrate the diverse ways in which girls contribute to tourism and community development.

At GITA-Africa, we do not simply empower girls to participate. We empower them to innovate, lead, and shape the future.

Supporting Innovation in Practice

During the International Museum Day celebrations in Jinja, GITA-Africa provided exhibition space to two young innovators whose work reflected creativity, entrepreneurship, and the potential of youth-led enterprises.

One of the exhibitors was a young female artist whose intricate handcrafted pieces showcased the beauty of African artistry and craftsmanship, through nature and wildlife. Through weaving and other traditional techniques, she transformed locally available materials into unique art pieces that celebrated culture, creativity, and identity.

Alongside her was a young male entrepreneur behind a locally inspired coffee and cocoa brand

, promoting value addition and highlighting the potential of Uganda’s agricultural products within the tourism experience. His work demonstrated how entrepreneurship can contribute to destination storytelling while creating opportunities for communities.

While GITA-Africa is intentional about empowering girls and young women, we equally acknowledge the importance of growing alongside young men who share our vision of innovation, sustainability, and community transformation. Creating inclusive spaces for collaboration enables us to build stronger networks and champion solutions that benefit society as a whole.

By offering visibility to emerging entrepreneurs and innovators, GITA-Africa seeks to inspire young people to pursue their ideas confidently while connecting them to opportunities, partnerships, and platforms that support growth and impact.
